"I began asking myself many questions. What are you going to do now that you have seen all of this? Are you going to change the way you live?"—Michael

"The American Dream has a major shortcoming. It does not include being aware of the nightmares others face. Would we really suffer that much by helping underdeveloped countries achieve basic human rights?"—Jim

The experience of a lifetime

Since 2004, USA students and moderators (many of whom are volunteers from CFA schools) have traveled for two weeks throughout Uganda, meeting our beneficiaries and experiencing life in a developing country. In 2006 CFA-Uganda welcomed its 4th and 5th delegations from Omaha, Nebraska.

African and American leaders talkingThese trips are often the encounter of a lifetime. Visitors see firsthand the positive aspects of Africa and its people: courage, faith, generosity, joy and a focus on relationships. They encounter its people in African dance, food and song. They traverse the awe-inspiring African landscape in driving up mountains and through national parks and hiking through the bush to the top of a waterfall.

And they encounter the sorrows of Africa, becoming eye witnesses to the struggles of its people: severe poverty; millions dying from HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis; lack of clean water; undependable power; cratered roads; poor health care; and millions of refugees and internally displaced people.

Together we pray for Africa and her people, celebrate what CFA has accomplished, and sew seeds of possibility in a generation of youth who will envision and create the world "yet to be."

"It was mind-boggling for me to try to explain to Ugandans the American concept of always buying to keep up with the latest trends."—Scott
