Internet Connectivity

Connecting with the world

A well-administered computer lab increases the capacity of any school.
The investment in a computer lab is further maximized when the lab is connected to a low cost, easy to maintain Internet connection.* Beneficiaries receive hands-on experience in harnessing the power of the Internet for very specific goals. Workshops for teachers include:

  • Internet basics: web browsers, web navgation,
best practices to avoid scams and viruses.
  • E-mail: How to set up accounts and communicate rapidly with anyone in the world.
  • Web research: How to use search engines, to capture and organize information addressing their community's issues: education & curriculum, health care, business, fund raising, sports, or current events.

* CFA grants reduce the upfront cost of Internet connection to under $200. The monthly Internet service provider (ISP) fee for the computer lab is about $55. Installation involves putting up a small antenna on a 10-meter pole outside the lab and connecting it to a wireless landline phone inside.

Note: Internet connectivity is also a key component in CFA's maintenance and repair classes for computer teachers.

"..Connectivity is not enough... ICT initiatives will not be appropriated unless they also deliver information that is useful and relevant to the end-users, and where the end-users (women and men, girls and boys) have the capacity to act on it." (6)
